Spreading The Gospel

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. John 7:38

What is the living water? Some say it’s Jesus, some say it’s the Holy Spirit. Living Water is a gift from God when you believe in Christ Jesus. Read on……

Living Water comes from the Living Rock

Living Water is a gift for those who believe in Jesus Christ. It is given when a person believes in Him. It flows into our heart cleansing us from all unrighteousness and flows out as rivers into each area of our life. This living water wasn’t available to us until Christ died and gave us the promise. Just as the Rock in Exodus sprung forth water after it was struck by Moses, Jesus was struck and from His sacrifice we are given rivers of living water. The Rock is Christ who brings us salvation.
This living water enters our heart when we believe. He (Jesus) is the fountain and source of the living waters. The bible tells us we are a temple of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit of God lives within us. The living water from Christ cleanses us and creates a Holy place within our heart for the Holy Spirit to dwell.
The living water not only cleanses us, it also brings the promise of eternal life. Scripture tells us. “The fountain of living water within us will spring forth into everlasting life”. All we need to do is believe in Him and ask for it. Remember Jesus told the woman at the well that she needed to ask for it. Speaking of asking, the bible tells us also to ask God for wisdom and the gift of the Holy Spirit James 1:5 . Luke 11:13

Living Water is given when you believe

Let’s start at the beginning – We need to believe first. In order to believe, we have to hear the gospel. Faith comes by hearing. It’s like a seed planted in your heart. God gives us free will and allows you to believe it or reject it. The parable of the farmer explains this further showing some believe and receive the message with pure joy and delight but soon the worries of the world and pull of worldly possessions stop the seed from growing. Someone can believe at first – but there are more steps after believe. One in particular that we will discuss here is eating the bread of life, but for now, let’s look further into this living water.

The Living water and the seed of the gospel

So what happens when the seed of good news is watered with the living water? Here we have a picture of the great tree in Psalm 1 and Jeremiah 17:7-8 and this person is referred (if you translated Hebrew) to as a great and valiant warrior! So we went from living water, to seed and now a living tree. Consider the verses :

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful;  But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.  He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Psalm 1: 1-3

The righteous man will be like a tree by rivers of water. How does a tree start? With a seed!! You see, the words in the bible aren’t there for nothing, everything has great and deep meaning. Let’s look at Jeremiah 17:7-8

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

Do you see that? The One who trusts in the Lord will be like a tree by the river. Notice that before Jesus came, there were no rivers of living waters in us, the Holy Spirit was not in us either. Notice the verses talk about a tree by the rivers, just as those in the old testament did not have the Spirit of God in them, but there were times the Spirit was upon them- just like being by the river! Okay, let me rephrase. Before Jesus, Psalms and Jeremiah tell of the Godly man who trusts in the Lord is like a tree BY the river and after Jesus, the Godly man is like a tree with the rivers in Him. As the Holy Spirit was upon people before Jesus and now in believers after Jesus died for us. It makes sense in my mind, don’t know if I’m making sense, but let’s move along, there’s more…..

And what about the fruits of the spirit? They are from the tree that is watered by the living water. For now , remember: When we believe, the rivers of living water flow into us from the Lord, these waters also water the seed or the beginning of the good news we heard.

Moving on…..
Ezekiel 36:25 tells us the water cleanses us and will satisfy our eternal thirst. Jesus told us the same thing. It cleanses us from all filthiness and worship of idols. Just a water cleanses in washing and bathing, so the living water of the Lord Jesus cleanses our hearts of all filth, sins, iniquity and idolatry. Isaiah 55:1 calls out to EVERYONE “COME TO THE WATERS! COME BUY AND EAT, BUY WITHOUT MONEY AND WITHOUT PRICE.” We are called to the waters that are free for us, this is the living water. I’m convinced the food this verse is talking about is the living bread, because that too is free for us. In Proverbs 18:4, King Solomon compares the words we speak as deep waters and the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook. Hopefully the words you speak are from the well of living waters within you, something to think about.

Is the Living Water also the Holy Spirit?

Isaiah 48:21 mentions the rock that was split and gushed out water. When Jesus died, this same thing happened. Jesus is the rock and the wellspring of living water. The living water comes from Jesus but what is the living water? In John 7:37-39, we are told that the living water from Jesus is for those who believe and it will flow out of our hearts. The next verse tells us that Jesus spoke this about the Holy Spirit, those who believe would receive the Holy Spirit, because until this time, the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified. In Eph 1:13-14, we have another indication of the Holy Spirit possibly being this water, but indirectly as if putting a puzzle together. Is it the Holy Spirit or does it cleanse our heart for the Holy Spirit? We know that the living water gives us, when we believe, eternal life and cleanses us, we also know that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit when we believe. Eph 1:13-14 tells us that when we believed in Jesus, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the promised possession. So here we are given 2 benefits to believingone is the promise of eternal life through the living waters, the others is our guarantee of this inheritance, the seal until redemption. It gets a little deep here, but I don’t know for sure if the water is the Holy Spirit, I see a link but not a 100% connection that the two are the same. In Act 2:38 The Holy Spirit was given to believers who repented, were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. In Acts 10:44 The Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word, and in Ephesians 1:13, those who trusted in the good news and believed were sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Living Water cleanses our hearts and it’s given when we believe in Christ. I don’t know if this is also the Holy Spirit– we know the blood and the water do sanctify and cleanse us. The Holy Spirit leads us, helps us, comforts us, gives us strength, wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, teaches us, reminds us….  and the Holy Spirit can be grieved. I believe the living water prepares the temple, cleansing the heart, for the Holy Spirit to indwell in us. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Power, Love, Wisdom, Fear of Lord, counsel and might. We are the temple of the Living God.

How do I eat the living bread? The flesh of Christ?

Now if we are cleansed through our belief in Christ (living waters) and the Holy Spirit indwells within us, we have another command to eat the bread or the flesh of Christ. This means to go forward, to walk with and to seek Him with all your heart.

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35

If you just believe and you turn back to your old ways and the world, you are like the seeds in parable of the farmer, who received the message with all joy but soon the cares of the world or satan snatched the truth or the seed from your heart. See, after you believe in Christ, you need to learn how to walk in His Ways by reading His word and living in righteousness and Holiness. This is what it means to eat the bread, and as you walk with Him. (Jesus call out “Come back to Me!”) This is what the bread is, it means coming towards Him, going to Him or coming back to Him from your wayward ways. Then those first rivers that flowed into your heart will now be a fountain within you.
Bread nourishes, bread strengthens. Don’t forget that seed…what happens when living water and the nourishment of the bread of life pass over the seed of the good news planted in your heart? Here we have the biblical example of that great unshakable tree in Psalm 1 and Jeremiah 17:7-8. Somehow, and I can’t quite describe how, but I do know it’s true.. there are two parts or three functioning parts of the spiritual heart. It is the Holy Place in the temple – 1) you spiritual heart where the seed is planted and grows, 2) it is the well of living water that flows out as rivers and 3) it is also the heart of the precious Holy Spirit in the form of spiritual fire, sparks or a great flame. (Ezekiel talks more on this (water flowing from the temple chpt 47) but to add that in, would be too long. Hopefully I can put more study time into that concerning the living water as well and find my notes on it which have disappeared somewhere)

*** I did have a vision of the heart and I could see the flames ( or no flames for some) of the Holy Spirit. Each trial and trouble looked like a demon spirit trying to blow out the fire. The more trials and tribulations the person had endured and overcame, caused the fire to grow. The bigger the flame, the more resistant the person was to new attacks – they weren’t bothered, that flame was too large for the enemy to snuff out.
On the other hand and at the same time I saw the heart with the outflows just as the bible says and also in Proverb 4:23. These outflows came from the heart and flowed into different areas of the persons life but also I could see that they connected the believer to Christ as if it were on a great vine- everything was connected through the vine and the heart. ***

A promised River of Cleansing for the Jewish People
(my disclaimer: these are my findings, everyone has different opinions and ideas on these verses, but for now in my life, this is what I believe these verses to mean)

In Zechariah, the One they pierced will be before them (the House of David and inhabitants of Jerusalem) and they will mourn for the One whom they pierced. That’s Jesus and this time has not happened yet, so Zechariah is talking about the last days or the last day. After this great mourning and repentance, a fountain will be opened for them to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness, this fountain has to be the fountain of living water- that the House of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will receive. This apparently will happen in the last days/day. Jesus will restore and fill those descendents of Israel with living water, those who did not believe, and now do believe because of His great Mercy on them. He has been watching and recording these families from the beginning of time, so awesome to think about! What a great day that will be. I think this verse directly relates to Revelation 7:17 where there is a seal of protection put on 144,00 of the tribes of Israel. Why? Well. A few reasons #1 both Zechariah and Revelation tell us that there will be salvation of the Jewish people in the last days, also #2 we know the Holy Spirit seals us. If the seal in Revelation 7 is the Seal of the Holy Spirit, then they believed in Jesus, which happened also in Zechariah and #3 further down in the chapter we are told the Lamb will lead them to rivers of living water which we also see in Zechariah. The Seal of the Holy Spirit, according to scripture is a guarantee, a promise and it seals us for the day of redemption. In revelation, it seems to be a protection over them from what is about to happen or redemption before whatever wrath is about to hit the earth. (This is all making me see the Jewish people as the prodigal son who returns home, interesting!)

 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. 11 In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves;  the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves;  all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves. In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.  “It shall be in that day,” says the LORD of hosts, “that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered .Zechariah 12:10-13:3

Revelation 7: After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree.  Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea,  saying, “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”  And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed:
5 of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed;[a]
of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand were sealed;
6 of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand were sealed;
7 of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed;
8 of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed.
9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,Be to our God forever and ever.Amen.”13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?”14 And I said to him, “Sir,you know.”So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them.  They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat;  for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.(remember they were mourning as if they lost a son in zechariah, could these tears be those of the House of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem as Zechariah tells us?

Cracked Cisterns, Hearts that hold no water (look at all the 13’s)

In the book of Jeremiah, the Lord said that the people had forsaken the fountain of living waters – we know from previous scripture that this is Christ. The people turned and forsook the Lord , their hearts were then as a broken down well that could hold no water. Water would be poured in, but it would never be an outflow into their life because of the decision they made to reject the Lord, the fountain of living water which would have led them to eternal life.

Jeremiah 2:13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,And hewn themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
Jeremiah 7:13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, All who forsake You shall be ashamed.“Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the LORD, The fountain of living waters
John 4:13-14 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.
Zechariah 13:1 “In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.
Hosea 13:15 Though he is fruitful among his brethren, An east wind shall come; The wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness. Then his spring shall become dry, And his fountain shall be dried up. He shall plunder the treasury of every desirable prize.

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35
