Shekinah’ s Blog: Mirror, Mirror
This blog post comes from a student of mine. I’m sure she would appreciate some visits and followers.
How amazing does it feel when you are noticed for your spirit? Truly it surpasses 100 compliments about your skin, hair or makeup. I know that I would rather be acknowledged for my spirit than my outward appearance. Everyone always says, “oh it’s what’s on the inside that counts.” I am here to reinforce the familiar message behind the statement, hopefully in a not so cliche way. No promises though ;).
There’s an awesome verse in 1 Peter (book in the Bible) that discusses this exact issue. 1 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” From this scripture we gain encouragement in knowing that God values our spirit over our outward appearance. I used the, “Mirror, Mirror on the wall,” quote to highlight the comparison between the famous fairy-tale and present day girls. As well as encouraging us, the Bible also warns us against this indulging vanity.
The end of Luke 6:45 says,“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of,” meaning your inner self will eventually show on the outside. To simply put it if your ugly on the inside it’ll catch up to you.
Coming back to my fist question, people who notice true worth are the people to surround yourself with. Problem is these people are rare; however there is a solution. God is one of those people (or being if we’re being specific) and He’s always just a prayer away.
